How do I establish citizenship?

Establishing your citizenship is the first step in applying for your U.S. passport. Thus it is important that you have the proper documentation or there will be delays in your application process.

If you were born in the United States a certified copy of your birth certificate or a previous passport is enough to satisfy this requirement.

Birth certificates can usually be obtained from the Village Clerk or Dept. of Vital Statistics in the locality where the birth took place. New York City residents can call (212) 788-4520 and other residents of the state can call (518) 474-3077.

Naturalized citizens must submit their Certificates of Naturalization or a previous passport as proof of citizenship.

All documents submitted, such as expired passports, birth certificates and Certificates of Naturalization will be returned by mail with the newly issued passport with the exception of affidavits done specifically for application purposes.

What if there is no record of my birth?

If no birth record exists, submit registrar’s notice to that effect. Also submit an early baptismal or confirmation certificate, hospital birth record, early census, school or family bible records, or notarized affidavits or persons having knowledge of your birth (preferably with at least one record listed above). Evidence must include your given name and surname, date and place of birth and seal or other certification of office (if customary) and signature of issuing official.

What if I am a Naturalized citizen?

If you were born outside of the U.S. but have become a citizen through Naturalization, you must submit either your original Certificate of Naturalization or a previous U.S. Passport to prove your citizenship.

What if I claim naturalization through my parents citizenship?

If you claim citizenship through the naturalization of your parents then you must submit your parents Certificates of Naturalization, your foreign birth certificate and proof of admittance into the United States for permanent residence.

What if I claim citizenship through birth abroad to U.S. Citizen parents?

If you were born abroad but claim citizenship through parents who are U.S. citizens you must submit a Consular report of Birth (form FS-240) or Certification of Birth (form DS-1350 or FS-545), or your foreign birth certificate, parent’s marriage certificate, proof of citizenship of your parents and affidavit of U.S. citizen parents, showing all periods and places of residence/physical presence in the United States and abroad before your birth. .
