How do I establish citizenship?
Establishing your citizenship is the first
step in applying for your U.S. passport. Thus it is important that
you have the proper documentation or there will be delays in your
application process.
If you were born in the United States a certified
copy of your birth certificate or a previous passport is enough
to satisfy this requirement.
Birth certificates can usually be obtained
from the Village Clerk or Dept. of Vital Statistics in the locality
where the birth took place. New York City residents can call (212)
788-4520 and other residents of the state can call (518) 474-3077.
Naturalized citizens must submit their Certificates
of Naturalization or a previous passport as proof of citizenship.
All documents submitted, such as expired
passports, birth certificates and Certificates of Naturalization
will be returned by mail with the newly issued passport with the
exception of affidavits done specifically for application purposes.
